Schadeck Castle - Swallow‘s Nest

Burgenweg, 69239 Neckarsteinach

Schadeck Castle in Neckarsteinach is also known as the "Swallow‘s Nest" due to its location on a steep slope above the Neckar, and the medieval ruin dating back to 1335 is the youngest of Neckarsteinach‘s four castles.

Schadeck Castle is the smallest and youngest of the four castles in Neckarsteinach - and particularly fascinating. It clings spectacularly to the steep mountainside above the Neckar like a swallow‘s nest. Bligger V had it built after there was no more room for him on the ridge. The construction was challenging and parts of the rock had to give way.

The ruins seem to grow directly out of the rock. A covered walkway on the shield wall offers a sweeping view of the Neckar valley and the Dilsberg.

Today you can easily reach the castle via a path through the former moat. The complex belongs to the state of Hesse, has been restored and can be visited free of charge at any time - including climbing the shield wall.

Freely accessible at all times.
