Hinterburg Castle

Burgenweg, 69239 Neckarsteinach

The almost 1000-year-old Hinterburg can be explored on foot. The keep offers a beautiful view of the Neckar valley and the Dilsberg mountain fortress opposite.

Right on a picturesque bend in the Neckar, opposite Dilsberg Fortress, the ruins of Hinterburg Castle are waiting to be discovered by you.

You can climb the 20-metre-high tower - the so-called keep. And believe me: the view from the top over the Neckar valley is absolutely stunning!

The castle dates back to the 12th century and was once the ancestral seat of the noblemen of Steinach. It was built in a strategically perfect location, where the Schadeck mountain merges into a mountain tongue. From here, you used to be able to keep an eye on both the Neckar valley and the Steinach valley - and you can do the same today!

Although the Hinterburg was rather small, it was extremely well defended. The tower was the strongest defensive structure and was deliberately built in the most vulnerable spot - so that no attack would go unnoticed.

The first known person to live in the castle was Bligger I von Steinach, who lived until 1165. His father was probably the builder. Particularly exciting: Bligger II, a true minstrel and poet, later lived at the castle. Three of his songs and a picture of him can be found in the famous Manessian manuscript. His harp even became the coat of arms of the town of Neckarsteinach.

The castle was destroyed during the Thirty Years‘ War, but as a ruin it has not lost its charm to this day. Today it belongs to the state of Hesse - and you can explore it freely.

Tip: It‘s best to take a flashlight with you - there is no lighting in the tower. This will not only make your ascent safer, but also a little adventure!

Freely accessible at all times.
