Vorderburg Castle

Schloßsteige 7, 69239 Neckarsteinach

The Vorderburg, also known as Landschadenburg, is the oldest of Neckarsteinach‘s four castles.

The Vorderburg was first mentioned in a document in 1341. However, according to current knowledge, it is assumed that the castle already existed when Neckarsteinach and Steinach were first mentioned in a document in 1142.

The castle was a fiefdom of the Lords of Steinach until they died out in 1653. Around 1200, the castle was inhabited by the minstrel Bligger von Steinach. Some scholars believe that Bligger von Steinach is the author of the Song of the Nibelungs.

In the 18th century, demolitions reduced the castle to its present, almost insignificant remains of keep and stone building. The still preserved town courtyard of the Lords of Steinach next to the church belonged to the front castle.

The castle is now privately owned, so visits are only possible with permission and only from the outside.
